Forward Tempo: Jet-powered drones will dominate strike & interceptor packages in the near term.
Speed is the next frontier in the Russia-Ukraine offense-defense competition. Jet-powered drones are increasingly occupying a larger share of Russian strike packages in heavily contested sectors, in response to Ukraine’s growing ability to intercept close to 92-96% of Shahed-type Geran drones.
With a reported range of up to 950 km, the Geran-5 can reach targets across most of Ukraine from launch sites inside Russia, which could force Kyiv to disperse rear-area infrastructure further and divert scarce air defense assets from the frontline, potentially weakening forward positions.
But despite pursuing what appears to be a strategic allocation of resources towards speed, survivability and specialized targeting, Russia cannot abandon mass saturation. Shaheds/Geran-2 drones will remain crucial in overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses and creating corridors for missiles and high-speed drones.
Limited domestic production capacity and reliance on foreign suppliers for jet engines also indicate that Russia’s pivot towards jet drones will be incremental and area-specific, spanning months.
